Welcome to the May issue of RECORDING Magzine! While technically
the focus of this issue is instrument miking, thanks to producer/author Mark
Hornsby and some exclusive images from the Apple Corps Ltd. archives, we
are in the middle of a British Invasion.
It's both incredible and yet no surprise that over 50 years on, we (especially
as musicians and audio engineers) are still fascinated by the songs and
recordings of the Fab Four. As I watched the three-part Get Back series on
Disney+, I was struck by many things.
For those of us who regularly write, play, and record music in a studio setting,
much of what we see is mundane, yet because it's The Beatles, it takes
on more significance and weight. We see the spark of creation, followed by
endless takes trying to nail the part and arrange songs on the fly. While these
songs are now canon, at the time, they were throwing ideas against the wall,
and nothing was sacred.
Most fascinating is how the band and producers dealt with the frustration
and creative tensions that happen when artists work together for hours, days
and weeks. Much has been made over the years of this footage capturing
" the end of The Beatles " - frankly, I thought it was pretty tame compared to
the fights and arguments I've witnessed and been a part of in the studio and
at band rehearsals.
Then we have the sonic quality of the recordings, made even more impressive,
seeing as the album was done live in a rectangular room with a PA
system and on a cold, damp and possibly breezy rooftop. Yet, whether the
original 1970 album or the new stereo and spatial audio remixes, the result
is about as hi-fi as you can get. This is a master class in instrument miking...
choose the right quality gear, put it in the right spot and then you and the
equipment should stay out of the way as the magic happens.
Our Beatles theme continues into our Fast Forward section. I was invited
to attend a presentation with Giles Martin discussing the remixing of The
Beatles 1 in Spatial Audio on Apple Music (not to be confused with Apple
Corps Ltd. above).
Continuing on the theme of remixes, six of this month's eleven reviews
are updates, rereleases, reconfigurations, recreations and new versions of
already popular products.
A final sub-thread running through this issue is weird and wonderful
instruments from South America, both in John Czerwinski's review of
the Orchestral Tools Andea library and Marc Urselli's latest Session Log.
Marc went down to Bogotá, Colombia, to record some of the most unique
instruments of his career. Finally I had the privilege of interviewing one of
my favorite bands, Lucius.
