Log L Session og L Session og by Marc Urselli Riosucio playing on the other side of the glass was a six-piece kit with assorted percussions. However, the main elements were hollowed-out dried gourds (similar to a Brazilian Bermimbau). Elastic tape, shrink wrap or tape span around them to create the skin or heads the drummer Eblis Álvarez setting up his sound making contraptions any two featured adjacent contraptions. I then filled the stereo field by strategically placing four U 67 mics and two RCA ribbons above. You've gotta see this with with your own eyes! Check out the links at the end of the article. 56 RECORDING May 2022 Next up...more contraptions That was not the last artist of the day to come in with self-built instruments. A trio called Malayo Tapir, blended electronics, electric upright bass and the most interesting drum set you've ever seen. It would beat with Cimbalom-type yarn mallets. Unlike a traditional drum set, the sounds coming out of these were gentle and low in volume. Rather than using dynamic mics that I would have had to gain up a lot, I decided to get up close and personal with four U 67 mics and both an e 602 and SM57 for two gourd-based kick drums... one with a homemade pedal. The sounds of these weird-looking drums reminded me of a West African talking drum without the pitch inflections. The played rhythmic patterns were akin to those you'd expect from ancient tribes in the Amazon rainforest, an influence that is most undoubtedly tangible all across Colombia.
