NAMM is Back!
Welcome to the June issue of RECORDING! There is a chance you could be
reading this very issue while walking the aisles at the 2022 National Association
of Music Merchants (NAMM) Show in sunny Anaheim, CA. Sure, June is an odd
time for NAMM (it's traditionally in January), but who cares-NAMM is back!
Now, technically I am writing this in May and NAMM has not happened yet.
But as you may gather, I am super-excited that right now it appears to be on the
horizon. We have our plane tickets and room reservations. RECORDING will be
at booth 15118 in the ACC North Hall. Stop by, say hello and pick up a " Shut
Up! We're RECORDING " sticker. I cannot wait to see you there!

This is also our guitar recording issue and we have some great advice from Mark
Hornsby on bass recording, Joe Albano talks reamping, and Marc Urselli takes us
back in time to sessions with the legendary Les Paul. Marc also gives guitar players
some valuable advice for their next recording session in this issue's Fade Out.
If you have ever heard the one about capturing great amp recordings with a
Shure SM57 and a Royer R series ribbon mic, you will love this month's interview
with producer/engineer Ross Hogarth. He is arguably the inventor of this technique.
The NAMM show is all about the gear and so are we, with no less than 18
product reviews in this issue as well.
Hear, Hear! A Public Service Announcement
The latest in hearing protection options from EarPeace is one of our reviews
in this issue. I am not telling you that you need those specific earplugs (although
they are a killer option), but if you are a musician, audio engineer, producer,
or just someone who loves music, please protect your hearing! Short of hearing
aids, hearing loss is not something that gets better, grows back or fixes itself.
Recently, while being fitted for a new set of custom in-ear monitors, the audiologist
asked if I would like my hearing tested? At first, I admit to being hesitant
and a bit scared. What if I learned I could no longer discern certain frequencies?
What if my hearing was damaged or diminished? Did I really want to know?
I went through with the testing and was ecstatic to learn that my hearing was
above average in all frequencies across the spectrum despite my age and profession.
Please do not take this as bragging, although it was great news.
I feel about loud sounds the same way I feel about secondhand cigarette
smoke, I am a total baby and I avoid it at all costs. For the last 30 years of my
life, I have militantly worn earplugs to concerts in all music styles. I wear earplugs
at movie theaters, when walking in large crowds, at noisy restaurants, at tradeshows,
on airplanes, when playing drums and when musicians are warming up
in the studio. Anytime decibel levels climb beyond 85dB-90dB, in goes the hearing
protection. In my case, despite often being teased about it, it has paid off.
So, this is my plea to you: protect your hearing at all costs. Ringing ears,
tinnitus and going to loud concerts unprotected are not badges of honor. This is
doubly true if being a recording musician is important to you.
