Downbeat
To talk about mixing, we need to first
talk about tracking. When Tom and I
started discussing this project, we agreed
to approach the tracking part of the record
in a very old-fashioned way using
minimal compression or EQ, and with
everyone playing in the room together.
We also agreed that we wanted to mix
the album in a modern, current way. This
would yield the best of both worlds: a
very open, pleasing sound when tracking;
and a product that could hopefully
relate to many more people than just the
traditional jazzers. Read on for some of
the tracking session highlights.
Kick
On Keith's drums, we used a Shure
SM91 inside the bass drum and an AEA
R84 out in front, but not too close. Keith
usually plays a 20 " bass drum with both
heads. He also plays it wide open with
no dampening on the inside. While I love
this sound-it sounds like a canon-sometimes
you must tame it for recording purposes.
You don't want the drum's decay
to drone on into the other drum mics. A little part of a packing blanket inside the drum,
barely touching the beater head, allows the drum to breathe, but calms it down just a bit.
Next, when using a mic inside the drum, you don't want to put the mic too close to
the head. Back it off a few inches until you catch a full revolution of the sound wave.
Remember, when you're dealing with the low end, sound waves are much longer.
Sure, you could keep the mic close and line it up in Pro Tools after the fact, but there
is a sweet spot between the two mics that sounds different when done right-and puts
a smile on everyone's face in the cue mix.
Guitar
Tom used his KEMPER PROFILER amp on the entire album, and a big part of the
sound is that Tom modeled all his personal favorite amps! To capture this guitar tone, I
used a pair of Rupert Neve Designs RNDI direct boxes, which are some of my favorites.
