Welcome to October. The leaves are turning, the temperatures
are falling and costume parties are being planned, all while the humble
pumpkin cowers in fear of being carved into a candlelit jack-o'-lantern-
or, worse yet, being processed into everyone's favorite (loved or loathed)
pumpkin-spiced concoction.
October also means it's time for our annual microphone locker issue, where
we look at classic and contemporary considerations for your mic locker. I know
I say it every year, but I love mics, and perhaps more than any other audio tool,
mics are my favorite things to review. There are so many styles, price points,
sonic colors, designs and uses from which to choose. Plus, no two are alike. Even
classic specimens of the same model can vary in sound and nuance. This makes
mic selection equal parts scientific, artistic and often just down to your mood and
personal taste on a given day.
Whether your mic locker contains one solid, does-all workhorse mic, or
30+ offerings to cover the sonic spectrum, if you love mics, this is the issue of
RECORDING for you-ok to be fair, we pretty much mention mics in every issue,
but I digress.
There are 35+ mics mentioned in this issue peppered throughout our reviews,
columns, and in our feature interview with one of my favorite musicians and producers
of all time, Daniel Lanois (U2, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson
and Peter Gabriel).
Learn about how Daniel mics up a piano (or three) for his latest release, Player,
Piano. He also shares his favorite mics, offers up invaluable studio advice, and
talks about his one-of-a-kind (so far) motorcycle helmet mic offering the ultimate
in vocal isolation.
We reviewed seven mics this month, and while we did not plan it this way, five
of them can trace their inspiration and sonic character to the AKG C12, Telefunken
ELA M 251 and the Neumann U 47 fet. We also have mic pres, synthesizers,
songwriting tools and plugins on review.
Our mic madness continues in our monthly features as producer Marc Urselli
shares his passion for vintage and modern ribbon mics. Mark Hornsby looks at
high-end mics from non-mic companies, and in Inside The Box, Joe Albano looks
at virtual mic preamp plugins.
