In Use
Vocals seemed like the logical place to
start. I tested in both a quiet studio environment
and a live rehearsal space. The character
of MA-D is much smoother than I anticipated,
with almost none of that typical
mid-punch flavor that I associate with handheld
dynamic mics. The lows are full, with
a softer and slightly pulled-back midrange
and a natural top end. It leans towards the
warmer side of the spectrum, but it has a
gentle presence boost around 8 kHz-10
kHz, which helps maintain articulation. It
handled the noisy band environment with
ease-this is saying something because our
rehearsal space is painfully cramped and
LOUD. If the MA-D can perform well there,
it'll have no issues providing plenty of gain
before feedback on stage.

ojave Audio is a California-based mic company led by engineers
Dusty Wakeman and Colin Liebich, bringing to life the condenser
or, should we now say, non-ribbon mic designs of David Royer
(yes, that David Royer). Until now, the Mojave line consisted purely of
large diaphragm condenser microphones. On review today is the MA-D,
the first-ever dynamic mic designed by David Royer and Mojave.
Overview
MA-D is a cardioid dynamic mic intended
primarily to be a hand-held microphone
for vocalists. This makes it well suited for
live sound, broadcast and House of Worship,
as well as a range of studio uses. In
the promotional materials, Mojave explains
that they have set out to design a " smooth
alternative " to and explicitly avoid the
" presence peak " that is common among
other dynamic mics on the market.
Part of the appeal to warming up
that top end for live use means you can
achieve higher gain before feedback.
The MA-D is also designed to have a

tight pickup pattern with excellent off-axis
rejection. Other design features include
an integrated pneumatic shock-mount to
reduce handling noise, an over-built internal
windscreen to minimize plosives,
and a rugged road-ready build quality.
With an SPL rating exceeding 160dB,
you should be safe (well, the microphone
should be anyway) for any concert or studio
on earth. It has a sensitivity rating of
-53dB and impedance of 600Ω.
It comes with a soft zipper bag and
a flexible mic clip. It has a classic black
aesthetic with a Mojave badge, ensuring
it will blend in on stage.
MA-D also pairs nicely with guitar
amps, with the smooth response providing
a rounded and forgiving tone for even
heavily distorted parts. The pulled-back
mids around ~500 Hz-800 Hz complement
mid-forward single coil guitars especially
well; I loved how it sounded with
my Telecaster bridge pickup. While some
dynamic mics, like a trusty Shure SM57,
tend to give guitars a 'nose' for lack of a
better term, the MA-D lives up to its marketing
as a " smooth alternative. " There
wasn't any nose to speak of, just a sizeable
low end, softer mids and a natural
and slightly rounded-off top. It's less SM58
and more of a handheld SM7B flavor.
Wrap Up
It is no surprise that David Royer and
the team at Mojave Audio have designed
a well-tuned dynamic mic. If you need
a mic to take to a studio session or on
tour, the MA-D should have the durability
and sound quality to give you plenty
of mileage. It's also reasonably priced,
making it an easy decision to add this reliable
piece of kit to your collection. After
how well it handled my band's rehearsal
space, I will undoubtedly be holding
onto it for our upcoming shows (I type
as I reach for my credit card ...). And
while it may not replace a cabinet full
of high-quality condenser microphones
(Mojave makes those as well) in a fully
stocked studio, I wouldn't hesitate to use
it on guitar amps or percussion in any
given situation. An excellent first dip into
the dynamic market from Mojave!
