As many readers know, besides being the editor of this esteemed publication
and a recording engineer, I am also a professional sound designer and tribalambient
musician. This means I have a 'thing' for synthesizers and effects.
On September 9-11, I attended Knobcon 2022 in Schaumburg, IL. Knobcon
(knobcon.com) is essentially a convention for synthesizers and the people who
love them-like me.
Knobcon featured live electronic music performances, DIY workshops, and
lectures focused on past and future synthesis concepts. The exhibitor hall was
filled with the latest modular wares, drum machines, control surfaces, analog and
digital keyboards, synth books (or should I say Bjooks) and more. As I mingled
with friends old and new, and plotted my subsequent purchases, I was reminded
of this issue's topic of studio ergonomics.
The problem with a synth addiction is where do I put these things, how do I
arrange them to fuel my creativity and workflow, and where does this damn cable
go again? For the modular crowd, it can be even worse.
One of my favorite things I saw was the company KVgear (kvgear.com), which
makes multi-tier desktop stands for mini-keyboards, drum machines, groove boxes
and FX pedals-all things that I constantly don't know where to put and position.
Other solutions for these wonderful audio widgets can be found in this month's
interview with Crowder, who gives us a tour of his personal home studio. He
reminds us that one of the most essential things in any studio environment is to
keep it " stupidly " easy to walk in and get your musical ideas down without the
need to hook things up, patch and repatch or troubleshoot.
Studio ergonomics also extends to room treatment, studio design (like building a
Hollywood Dub Stage in your house), and monitoring, all of which we cover this month.
Speaking of monitoring, if you are into low-end, this is the issue for you. We
have three subwoofers from Focal, one from KRK, and we revisit two bass extension
cabinets from Amphion in our A Family Of Amphion Monitors Compared. All this,
along with studio builds, the state of acoustics, a host of fresh product reviews and more.
