January is our drum recording issue, and this one is jam-packed with percussive-themed
knowledge, products and more. We have a pair of amazing
drum-centric interviews this month. In Inside the Studio, Mark Hornsby sits down
with legendary drummer Steve Gadd, and I had the honor of speaking with producer
Hugh Padgham about his history of drum production and the release of his
Toontrack Hitmaker SDX--reviewed in this issue.
This year, we are taking a break from our DAW/Computer-focused Inside the
Box as Joe Albano instead kicks off a new round of entry-level Studio 101 articles.
This month, class is in session with an Introduction to Drum Recording.
Session Log returns for a third year. In this installment, Marc Urselli shares his recent
recording jaunt to Japan, including everything you would ever want to know
about tracking Taiko drums. Aaron Trumm returns for this month's
Fade Out with thoughts on New Year's resolutions,
and Marty Peters is back for his final round of
Readers' Tracks ... say what now? With that, I
will let Mr. Peters take it from here.

Chaucer hit that one on the head, didn't he? So
what in the world has that got to do with recording,
you ask? Well, friends, it's with an incredible mixture
of wonder, gratitude, and, yes, sadness that my 26year
run here as the author of RECORDING's monthly
Readers Tracks column is finally coming to an end.
What an unbelievable run it has been; from the early
days of reviewing submissions on cassette tapes,
on through CDs, Mini Discs and MP3s. I have had a
front-row seat at one of the most transformative times in our industry's history. From
the nascent days of computer and software-based recording to the emergence of
the home and project studio boom, I've gotten an on-the-job education that I could
have never imagined when I reviewed my first submissions in 1996.
I'd like to sincerely thank Tom Hawley, Brent Heintz, Mike Metley, Paul Vnuk,
and all of the RECORDING staff, past and present. You have been the best! I'd
also like to thank my wife for her input and support all these years. Heartfelt
thanks to you, loyal readers. You have informed and educated me throughout,
and I hope I was able to reciprocate in kind. Finally, forever thank you to my first
editor, dear friend and mentor Lorenz Rychner.
