In some cases (perhaps more scientific
uses), I can see pulling up a spec sheet to
ensure you're selecting the optimal impedance
for the given microphone. The general
rule of thumb is to use a setting ~10x
greater than the microphone impedance.
For most cases (or maybe it's just me?)
you will toggle between the options, and
choose the tonality that suits your taste or
needs. Close enough for rock n' roll; if
it sounds good it is good-all of those
adages apply here. The Drawmer 1972
is far from the only preamp with variable
input impedance settings, but it's always
a welcomed addition.
In Use
As mentioned in the Soyuz 1973 review
(reviewed on page 60), I did a fair
amount of testing with the Soyuz 1973
microphone running into the Drawmer
1972 preamp, yet somehow I didn't rip
a hole in the space-time continuum. Regardless,
I tested a barrage of other input
sources, including dynamic, ribbon and
condenser microphones, plus I ran a guitar
direct into the Hi-Z instrument inputs.
The underlying theme across all input
sources remains: transparent and quiet
with ample headroom. There wasn't a
single source or microphone I threw its
way that felt underpowered. In fact, on
lower level signals, the 1972 is a cut
above many other preamps.
'Lift' became nearly a set-and-forget
setting for me-especially in my day
job as a post-production engineer.
When it came to recording foley, ambiances
and even ADR, the lift setting enabled
me to worry less about clipping.
I didn't need to crank the input gain to
capture the lower range of the performances.
It's a game changer for foley
work in particular.
While recording electric guitar, I decided
to test the impedance settings with my
trusty Royer R-121. Results will vary depending
on which mic you're using-I'm
using the R121 only for a general example.
The impedance changes provided
very subtle changes in my testing, but to
my ears, the 2.4kΩ provided the fullest
tone for the R-121.
Final Thoughts
The Drawmer 1972 is an excellent allaround
preamp. If you're in the market
for something clean and transparent, this
will serve you well while giving you access
to a few unique features you won't
find elsewhere. My favorite feature is the
Lift function, which is incredibly well-executed
and practical for many situations.
It's almost an " easy button " when capturing
sources with wide dynamics without
needing to compress the signal or risk
distorting louder sections. Add a few
tone-shaping and impedance settings,
and you have one powerful preamp!
