the guitar sounds like on the studio monitors
instead of headphones. It's also nice to be
in the same room, talking through parts instead
of using the talkback mic.
Carl recently had the good fortune of
scoring an extremely rare (only a few 100
ever made) Dumble Overdrive Special amplifier.
Carl likes to describe it as " Unsafe at
any speed! " because he can get it to sing
at any volume without any distortion or
drive pedals. Throughout the sessions, we
attempted to marry it with a Klon pedal or
another pedal to saturate the tone. But the
guitar straight into the amp was always the
better choice-it saturated plenty! Dumble:
If you know, you know.
Carl's go-to clean stereo setup is a 70s
era Hiwatt 100-watt on the left and a
Fender Showman on the right. With a bit of
delay and stereo chorus, this was his sound
for the one cover on the album-Jackson
Browne's " Jamaica Say You Will. " Carl
also uses a Dr. Z Carmen Ghia and Dr. Z
SRZ-65 a lot and three vintage Marshalls:
a Plexi 1966 JTM45, a Plexi 1968 50watt
and a 1969 100-watt. A 1964
Fender Tremolux always gets used, and
a Hamstead Artist 20 RT head, made in
England. Combo amps included a vintage
Vox AC-30 Top Boost, a Fender 1964 Twin
Reverb and an old Gibson Falcon.
VOCALS
While Carl did sing some scratch
tracks with the band at The Village,
all
of
Carl's
vocals were redone at
our friend Matt Boggs' Rambling Rose
Recording Studio just outside of Dallas,
TX-a beautifully designed Russ Berger
room (see our March 2022 issue).
I used one of Matt's Wunder Audio
CM7 mics through his Rupert Neve
5088 Shelford, which sounds excellent
on Carl's voice. Background vocals

were
done
at Chad Wackerman's
new Drum Room studio in Long Beach,
California. Here we used all AKG C414
mics through Chad's vintage Trident
console. Chad's daughter Sophia
James ( " American Idol " ) appears on the
album's title track in a duet with Carl.
GLUING IT ALL TOGETHER
This album was mixed at Rambling
Rose on the Neve 5088. This is the first
project I have done where I have used
Tom Danley Studio Monitors throughout
an entire project. I used the same early
TDH-3 (and TDH-4 models) that Paul
Vnuk Jr. reviewed in the January issue
for the tracking sessions. For mixing, I
used the new, updated maple TDH-3,
and they sound amazing-crazy accurate
with spot-on translation.
It's paramount to note that Murphy Bulldog
also contributed as executive producer
and spiritual advisor on all sessions.
Riverboat Sky will be released this
summer, with a vinyl release later this
year, plus some great video footage of
the recording process shot by the talented
Mr. Nigel Dick.
