Welcome to the May issue of RECORDING and this month's focus on instrument
recording. Taking the right microphone into a great preamp, maybe a nice compressor
and placing that in the perfect spot with an inspired player making music
on a great instrument is something I still look forward to more so than any other
stage of the recording process. Luckily miking up and recording instruments is still
a vital part of the music-making process.
" But I use all sample libraries and soft synths in the box, " you say. Well, unless
you are using purely electronic sounds or modeling instruments (see this month's
Pianoteq review for a great example of that), someone somewhere had to mic up
and record the samples you are now using in your productions.
In fact, some of the most fun I ever had in my entire recording career was when I
was recording and producing loop and sample libraries. Every session presented
a challenge of learning to mic up and record strange and wonderful instruments
from around the country-and the world-that I would probably never encounter
in most typical day-to-day sessions. Marc Urselli brings us a great example this
month in Session Log (no spoilers-go check it out).
In this month's interview, we are reminded that it's also not just about using the
most expensive mics and gear to record boutique instruments either-it's rising to
the challenge to use the gear you have to best capture the source that is right in
front of you. That interview personally takes me back to my high school hard-core
punk days to reconnect with one of my favorite EPs and bands of that era as I sit
down and chat with Kevin Seconds, Ian MacKaye and Don Zientara about recording
7 Seconds Walk Together, Rock Together. Don reminds us that the magic
in the recording session happens from the players in the tracking, not the gear.
Of course, we are unapologetically a gear magazine, and this month we have
reviews of 25 products, from microphones to preamps, to software and even an
online collaboration platform.

with the fast-growing AI trend in audio in the
