REVIEW
The LCT 640 TS (reviewed January 2016) records both the
front and rear capsules independently, allowing you to alter the
pickup pattern after you record. Then you have the LCT 1040
(reviewed April 2022) that is more of a microphone system
with too many features to list.
RAY(sing) the Bar
The out-of-the-box thinking continues with RAY, a high-quality
large diaphragm condenser mic boasting a new LEWITT technology
dubbed AURA. AURA tracks a source's distance from
the mic and automatically adjusts the level and the tone accordingly.
It can also similarly mute and unmute the mic based on
the distance of the source-no, really.
Hello RAY
At first glance, RAY looks similar to previous LEWITT offerings.
It is housed in the same black and green rectangular
5.43 " x 2.04 " x 1.42 " body as the LCT 240, LCT 440
PURE, or, most accurately, the LCT 441 FLEX, with which it
shares the same two-button layout and LED-based display. It
also uses a 1 " cardioid true condenser capsule with 8dB(A)
of self-noise and a Max SPL of 131dB.
Proximity Problems No More
As anyone who has ever recorded a voice knows, the sound
of a mic changes in relation to the source's distance from the
capsule. Generally, it gets louder and boomier closer to the mic
or quieter and thinner as you move away. This low-end bloom
is known as proximity effect.
AURA technology uses a sensor on the front of the mic to
determine the distance to the source. It then automatically raises
and lowers the volume so the level remains constant as the
source moves about. The ideal range of the sensor is about
2-40 inches.

ienna-based LEWITT has been carving a new
path in the microphone (and interface) world
since 2009 and this trajectory continues with
RAY. From the signature, eye-catching black and
green look to the bold, clean sound and innovative
features, RAY is the company's latest mic offering.
A History of Innovation
Over the years, LEWITT has brought us the LCT 940 (reviewed
May 2013), a mic with blendable tube and FET circuits,
and the DTP 640 REX kick drum mic that offers both dynamic
and condenser capsules in one (reviewed September 2019).

It also continuously adjusts the tone to attenuate the proximity
effect while simultaneously boosting frequencies that fall off
with distance from the capsule.
The dedicated AURA switch on the front of the microphone
activates this sensor and engages a segmented LED graph that
provides a general visual representation of the proceedings.
Shut Up...We're Recording
The second switch on the front of RAY is a MUTE button-
standard on many USB and even some dynamic hand-held
mics, but not so much on an XLR-based large diaphragm condenser
mic. In any case, it can be handy for clearing your
throat, coughing or talking offline.
Auto-Mute
RAY can also use its sensor to automatically mute the signal
when the source moves beyond a user-set distance. Press and
hold the MUTE button for a few seconds until it blinks. Position
your head at the distance where you'd like the mic to turn off
automatically. When the button stops blinking, the MUTE by
Distance function is set, and the mic will mute every time you
move beyond the threshold.
