API TCS-II Channel Strip
A 19 " top-tier front-end and mixdown tool

I
n our July 2015 issue, we looked at The Channel Strip from API featuring
the preamp, compressor and EQ sections from the channel strip of an
API mixing console in a single space 19 " rack. Now, 14 years after
its initial release, API has introduced the updated and enhanced TCS-II.
The 2.0 Channel Strip
While not far removed from the first
version, the TCS-II offers some notable
upgrades and alterations that align it
with other current-generation API offerings.
These include improved metering
options, knob upgrades and, most notably,
updating the 527 Compressor to
527A status.
TCS-II Tour
The TCS-II is a single space 1U 19 "
rackmount device dressed in black with
a host of back-lit push buttons, stylistic
API knobs and controls
divided
into
four sections: 512C Preamp -> 527A
Compressor -> 550A Equalizer -> 325
Line Driver (output).
These well-respected API processors
can be found in many other configurations,
from API 500 Series modules to
additional 19 " rack offerings. The takeaway
for the TCS-II is that each module
is a complete device on its own, and it's
this chaining of op-amps and transformers
into op-amps and transformers that
give an API channel strip its sound.

Well Connected
API is also famous for its modularity,
having invented the 500 Series format.
While these are not 500 Series modules,
they can function as such, thanks to
the plethora of rear connections.
Around the back, you will find an
XLR mic input on one end and an XLR
channel out on the other. Between
those are nine 1
/4
" TRS ins and outs
covering line-level input, compressor
sidechaining and DC stereo linking.
More impressively, the preamp, compressor
and EQ sections each have
dedicated I/O. Also on the back is a
3-prong IEC socket.
512C Preamp
The 512C is one of history's most
well-respected preamp circuits, based
around the famed API 2510 and 2520
op-amps. It
offers 68dB of mic gain
with a low -129 dBm EIN noise floor.
It can also accept line-level signals
and high-impedance instrument sources
(50dB of gain) through a dedicated
front panel 1
/4
" input.
Its controls include gain, polarity, +48V
phantom power, pad (-20 dB Mic / -6 dB
Line) and a multifunction source selection
button. Previously this button changed
color to indicate the selected source, but
it is replaced by a much easier-to-discern
trio of LED indicators. A +22dBu peak
LED was added to the preamp section.
You can also get a detailed readout of
the preamp levels with the full-scale meter
in the Output section.
527A Compressor
This VCA-based 2510 and 2520 opamp-equipped
compressor was updated
to 527A status. Sonically and functionally,
there is little difference between
the two iterations; however, as with the
standalone 527A, the gain reduction
meter is improved, along with the addition
of an IN/Bypass button.
The 527A is one of the most fully
featured and versatile compressors in a
channel strip with no less than ten controls/options.
In addition to threshold
(+10 to -20 dBu), attack (1 to 25 ms)
and release (0.3 and 3 seconds)-via
a stacked dual concentric pot-and
ratio (1:1 and ∞:1) controls, users can
select between Old (feedback) or New
(feedforward) style compression. Users
may choose between soft or hard knee
