Wow, five years already?
Just yesterday, our Associate Publisher Brent Heintz reminded me that this issue
marks five years since I took over as the Editor-In-Chief of RECORDING Magazine.
Five years...for some things, that's a long time; for other things, that's nothing.
It also means I have now been contributing to the pages of this magazine for
a humbling 21 years...there's that time thing again.
I decided to look back at my
Fade In from the May 2019 issue.
One thing that has not changed
was my proclamation that " I am
addicted to recording gear! " I still
love learning about and using the
tools and software that enable us
to craft music, whether it's through
my own reviews or those from
our monthly contributors. In fact,
an effective measurement of time
for many of us is to consider what
gear we had and were using five,
ten or fifteen years ago and what
we are using now. What pieces
made the cut, what did we outgrow,
what pieces no longer work and what became our personal trusted workhorses?
What did you get rid of and wish you still had?

For reference, I have included a photo of my studio from five years ago and
now, and it's fun for me to see the evolution.
Telling Stories
One of the scariest questions I received five years ago was from our Publisher,
Tom Hawley, " What's your vision for the magazine? " I think my initial reaction was,
" Wait, I have to have a vision? Doesn't the magazine just sort of...happen? " I think
my answer to that question today would be " Telling Stories. " Every interview, every
bit of recording advice, and every review is, in essence, telling a story.
When I get a piece of gear in for review, my job is not to impose my wants
and will onto it and proclaim it good or bad; I think it's to figure out what is
its story. What was it designed to do? For whom was it created? Why was it
made, and so on.
So, what's the story this month? This is our annual vocal recording issue, and
we have tons of great stories and advice to help you get the most out of your
vocal tracks.
In gear, we tell the stories of seven microphones ranging from $150 to $9,000,
plus we have plugins, soft synths, keyboard controls, channel strips and more.
To wrap this up, I want to say thank you to you. It is wonderful to hear from our
wide-ranging family of readers, both beginners and long-time industry professionals
of all ages, about how much you are enjoying the direction the magazine has
taken these past five years. I look forward to sharing more of our stories together
in the future.
