Side-By-Side
To get my bearings, the first thing I did with Crème was compare
it side-by-side with a Chandler REDD mic (whose top end leans
toward the 251 camp), an AKG C12V R and a Neumann M 49V.
The Crème was the boldest of the bunch with the warmest
top-end. This does not imply it's a dark mic, as it offers
plenty of top-end clarity; it was just not as bright nor open as
the other three. The very top-end tone was perhaps closest
to the M49V.
Despite the low-end roll-off shown on its frequency graph,
it had the thickest, meatiest weight and punch of the bunch. It
never sounded like it was trying too hard to keep up with the
other mics, which cost over two to four times as much.
In Use
Next, I put the Crème to use on acoustic guitars, vocals,
cajon, tambourine, shakers, mandolin, a full drum kit, a foot
outside a kick drum and on a bass amp.
Crème proved to be a very workable mic on them all. Based
on distance and position, I found a great-sounding spot for
each source to fit the song.
On acoustic guitar, at a 2-3' distance, it captured a wellbalanced,
clean, even tone that was easy to layer into a mix.
On a minimal guitar and vocal song, I found that 3-4 " from
where the neck joins the body and angled toward the sound
hole captured a thick, rich tone that I could dial in by moving
the mic closer to the 12th fret for less body or in for increased
resonance. This added richness and works beautifully on
typically thin sources like mandolin as well.
On drums, I preferred it as a mono-front of kit mic more than
as an overhead, and here, the polar pattern options worked
well to open up and introduce more or less room into the recording--although
overall the Crème is more of a dry focused
mic rather than open and roomy.
Nicely, the nine polar patterns (Fig. 8 through Cardioid
to Omni) switch without thumps or pops, making it easy to
dial in the sound as the performer plays. This mic also has
a tight, neutral off-axis rejection and a minimal yet present
proximity effect.
Crème is a great vocal mic capable of up-close intimacy. It
can also sound great at a distance on loud, aggressive vocalists.
Its top-end smoothness works well to round off spiky singers
and bright cymbals like hi-hats, chinas or tambourines. This
is a great mic to try if you have a thin-reedy singer.
Both on kick drum and bass cabinet, Crème offers a lovely
low punch, while its tailored low-end keeps it from getting
boomy or muddy.
Summoning up some subjective adjectives, I would call the
Monheim Crème rich, bold and dry, balanced with just the
right hint of clarity. It definitely leans toward a vintage sound,
but nicely, not in a heavy-handed way.
Wrap Up
The Monheim Crème is an excellent entry into the world of
microphones. Crème is not a clone of any other mic. As mentioned,
it has its own sound, which is eminently workable on
darn near any source. It comes in a stellarly put-together kit,
and while it is not an inexpensive mic, it is much more affordable
than many comparative models.
