The SM4 might get edged out if you have a particular mic that is just absolutely perfect for a specific voice or source, but it's also one of those mics that you can just reach for with the expectation that it will offer usable results across the board with little effort. I would love to hear a pair on drum overheads. The bottom line is that the Shure SM4 succeeds as a well-designed home studio mic on three fronts: sound, affordability and ease of use, thanks to its compact size and innovations.
