LETTERS FROM LEADERSHIp Why AAHOA leadership matters E BHARAT (BRUCE) PATEL AAHOA Chairman (2016-2017) VERY SECOND OF EVERY DAY, resident and international travelers spend almost $30,000 in the United States. This equates to $2.5 billion a day. There is no denying travel and tourism is a major economic force. AAHOA members now own almost half of all hotels in the United States and have become a significant leader in the travel and tourism industry. In turn, we are a leader in fueling America's economy. So what do we do with this leadership responsibility? AAHOA's more than 15,000 members already play an integral part in local communities of every U.S. state. Our hotels are often the geographical center of many neighborhoods, towns and cities. We are the home away from home for visiting relatives, business travelers and vacationing families. We host meetings of the local rotary club and small business workshops. We also offer starting career opportunities for local youth and sponsor area ball teams. Yet, despite all we do, every day in the towns in which we live, we have only just scratched the surface of what can be accomplished by combining our incredible influence and resources. We must recognize that despite the amazing positive impact we have, there are those who, knowingly or unknowingly, take actions that hurt our businesses. To combat this, AAHOA must be unified and committed to defending hotel owners when laws and regulations threaten our livelihood. When cities target only hotels for extreme wages, and states create new hotel taxes, and the National Labor Relations Board invents fictitious definitions of employee-employer relationships to help organized labor destroy the franchise model, and when Congress attempts to change tax law to cost hotel owners hundreds of thousands of dollars when selling Leading the fight CHIP ROGERS AAHOA President & CEO AHOA IS AN ORGANIzATION of extraordinarily ambitious and hard-working entrepreneurs. The idea of achieving through hard work and risk taking is inherent in every single AAHOA member. The founders of AAHOA built their wealth brick by brick, from nothing. They also taught their sons and daughters to relentlessly pursue the same degree of excellence. Today, AAHOA continues to encourage and celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit that made our association - and made it great. That's one 8  | MAY 2016 | TODAYSHOTELIER.COM reason we partnered in 2014 with Job Creators Network (JCN), an organization founded by entrepreneurs - like AAHOA members - who believe that inspired, well-informed employees are critical to American free enterprise. Amid the vitriol of recent wage debates, JCN has posed a very important question: Why are we focusing on minimum-wage hikes when we should be talking about how to maximize wages - for everyone? Instead of government mandates, JCN contends, we should talk about opportunities. Let's work on education and job training. Let's take Big Labor and its inflammatory rhetoric out of the employer-employee their properties, only one association stands strong for hotel owners: AAHOA. The more than 15,000 AAHOA members, and the thousands of hotel owners who are not yet AAHOA members, depend on what we do to protect their investments. Yes, there are many great organizations that defend small businesses and the hospitality industry. We are proud to be partners with many of them such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the American Hotel and Lodging Association. However, there is only one association singularly dedicated to the hotel owner, and it is AAHOA. This is a position of leadership we embrace but one that requires persistent dedication to our mission: to help you make money, save money and protect your investment. "There's no limit to what free men and free women in a free market with free enterprise can accomplish when people are free to follow their dream." - Jack Kemp, Former Congressman relationship and start to make real progress, together. As IHG CEO Elie Maalouf noted at the 2016 AAHOA convention, "You can't legislate prosperity." I couldn't agree more. With advocacy partners like JCN and our ironclad commitment to protecting American small business, AAHOA is leading the fight within hospitality to ensure that wealth - via hard work and persistence - is attainable by all. http://www.TODAYSHOTELIER.COM
