industry today, it's clear that
have come fully into their
own. They are breathing
new life into the same industry their parents joined decades ago, but
finding themselves in very different circumstances. Many of us were raised in
the industry, but - unlike our parents - we
have the resources, opportunity and even,
occasionally, the desire to leave it.
The interesting part? Far more often
than not, we stay.
I am proud to count myself among second-generation hotel owners. My generation owes a debt it can never repay to our
predecessors, who sacrificed, saved and
struggled to find prosperity in this amazing industry.
In many ways, we seek to emulate our
predecessors; their wisdom is an invaluable guide as we cut new paths within our
industry. But there is one critical difference
between us and them.
Today's young hotelier is in the industry
by choice. He or she often has many years of
firsthand exposure to hospitality, earned
an advanced degree and returned to the
family business as part of management.
I am proud to see my generation becoming the movers and shakers of hospitality. Some of us are buying hotels outright,
and many others are developing hotels
and forming management companies,
but not the way our parents did. Secondgeneration hoteliers are not following the
model that so many of us grew up with.
Because of the sacrifices and hard work
of our elders, we can focus on building

and developing branded hotels in some
of the most sought-after locations around
This generation didn't need hospitality.
We chose it. We chose to take on the challenges and reap the considerable rewards
of entrepreneurship in an industry that
provides not only high-quality accommodations but also millions of american jobs.
One by one, we saw and took an unprecedented opportunity to continue our family
legacies and help move hospitality fully
into the 21st century.
First-generation hoteliers needed to
form this association to protect themselves
from discrimination; the second generation started their careers already assured
of their worth and importance within the
industry. In more ways than one, those
early hoteliers gave us a head start by
working so hard to establish aaHOa as a
leading voice in the industry.
Where we go from here remains to be
seen. It is exciting to see the smartphone
and iPod generation come into its own in
the hotel industry and in this association.
as chairman, I am proud this year to
oversee aaHOa's contributions to the
development and education of up-andcoming hoteliers and excited to see how
the industry unfolds under our leadership.
While we may differ from our predecessors
in some ways, our goals are fundamentally
the same. We are unified in pursuit of a
common vision, and that shared purpose
will continue to guide aaHOa's evolution
now and for generations to come.
