C

uando se trata de manejar
cierto tipo de carga, algunos
puertos de inmediato se vienen
a la mente como líderes en la
industria. Podría ser la suerte de su ubicación, los años de acumular experiencia
o la disposición de apoyar a los transportistas conforme crecen. No hay una razón
única para cambiar de un nicho a una
especialidad absoluta.
Pero algunos factores corren por toda
expansión: el deseo de ir más allá de la
comodidad y convertirse en experto en
negocios diferentes a puertos. "Si abordas tu negocio portuario solo mirando
qué hay dentro de los portones, no tendrás éxito", dijo Blair Garcia, PPM®,

vicepresidente y director por EEUU de
Maritime Practice para WSP USA. "Como
los puertos son nodos a lo largo de la
cadena de abastecimiento de la logística,
es vital que tengan una relación firme con
aquellos componentes de logística que no
pueden controlar, ya sean empresas de
camiones, transportistas oceánicos, ferrocarriles, otros suplidores y proveedores
de servicios".
Lo mismo aplica para proveedores
como WSP (anteriormente WSP | Parsons
Brinckerhoff). "Para que tengamos éxito,
debemos establecer una relación con
nuestros clientes en puertos para poder
satisfacer a cabalidad sus necesidades",
dijo Garcia. "Esa relación y el hecho de
