» GUEST VIEWPOINT Preparing the Port Leaders of Tomorrow By Dr. Noel Hacegaba Chief Commercial Officer and Managing Director of Commercial Operations, Port of Long Beach Chair, AAPA Curriculum Committee A hallmark of AAPA is its longstanding mission to train the next generation of port leaders. This continues to be a major initiative that is becoming increasingly important as port authorities find themselves at a critical juncture. Recent changes in the shipping industry are, in some ways, redefining the role of the port authority. With that comes a new profile for a port authority leader. This is where AAPA can help. Through its flagship Professional Port Manager (PPM®) program, port authority professionals from across the Western Hemisphere can become equipped and empowered to lead their ports with confidence and effectiveness. With its comprehensive curriculum, seminar-style courses and the reputation and vast network of AAPA behind it, the PPM® program is bestsuited to equip the next generation of port authority leaders. PPM® Program Reaches New Milestones Having been around since 1995, the PPM® program has a long track record of success. At its most recent graduation that took place at the 2014 AAPA Annual Convention, the program graduated its 100th PPM®. Now, the class of 2019 has set a new milestone by welcoming 28 candidates, the program's largest incoming class yet. As a graduate of the PPM® program, I can attest to the value of the program. No Preparing leaders for the existing and emerging challenges and demands of a port authority requires a customized curriculum that captures the latest trends and issues facing our industry.
