While the quick turnaround time was a
significant challenge to be addressed, Birdi
said that otherwise, the airport was very
open to a solution.
"Ports should think about packaging procurement in a way that lets the contractor
solve the problem," Birdi said. "Don't try to
solve the problem in house. Say where we
are, where we want to be, what the timeline
is and what the budget is. You don't know
what's out there until you ask the question."
He emphasized that a system is a system, and a solid approach can apply to
any system, be it airport or port. "The
public is directly impacted by what's happening in transportation because it's a
network," he said. "Whether air or sea or
rail/transit, any impacts in the system are
definitely felt at the community, if not the
national, level."

Predictive Data Transforms
Manufacturing
Transportation is a legacy industry that
is figuring out how to better use technology to its advantage, but another legacy
industry - manufacturing - is ahead of
where the port industry is and can serve

"It's about being the voice for your industry and not
letting someone else be that voice."
-Doug Wheeler, Florida Ports Council
as a model, said Ash Padwal, chief risk officer for Allied Telesis, which has traditionally been a hardware provider but is now
also providing professional services and
process engineering.
Allied Telesis works with many manufacturers, such as those involved in the auto
and chemical industries, who have been
relying on the same major investments for
40 or 50 years. Padwal says that his company
is working with its clients to make the existing equipment smarter. Communications
technology can capture data that was previously inaccessible.
"It used to be that once a process started,
you would only get data at the end of the
process," Padwal said. "Now we have the
ability to tap into machines, processes and
procedures to anticipate things before
they occur."
Manufacturing refers to the revolution
going on right now as "industry 4.0" as new

data elements not only help improve gains
by existing metrics but also help create new
metrics for success.
"Any operation where the margins are
slim and the volume is high can't afford
errors and omissions in machines," said
Padwal. He sees significant similarities
between manufacturers' reliance on their
equipment and the role of cargo handling
equipment such as cranes in ports.
While every industry uses data communications in one way or another, Allied
Telesis is always working to find partners
for "projects that are revolutionary or at
least evolutionary - how our core competencies are being used in a new way."
Ports are ripe for efforts to tap into data
to transform their operations using predictive analytics.
"The explosion of data in the enterprise is offering unique opportunities,"
said Padwal.  ●
