Georgia County Government - Summer 2016 - 20

FEATURE Insights from Georgia's Congressman Lynn Westmoreland GEORGIA'S REP. LYNN WESTMORELAND, a six-term member of the U.S. House of Representatives, announced earlier this year he was not running for re-election. As he reflects on his time in Congress, we asked him to share his opinions on how counties can effectively interact with their member of Congress. He shared some success stories on ways he has partnered with his local governments to solve issues of mutual concern. How important is it for county commissioners to develop a rapport with members of the Georgia congressional delegation? Very important. I have personally found those relationships to be beneficial to my ability to serve in Congress because our county commissioners make me better aware of local matters. I do my best to travel the district and speak to folks about the issues they are facing, but I also rely on those on the ground to keep me informed. At the same time, having commissioners request a meeting in either Georgia or DC allows them to share with me ways I can help them. I want to know if and how I can help, and I appreciate the commissioners reaching out. It's a mutually beneficial relationship that helps us accomplish the same goal: making Georgia a better place to live and work. Do you have any success stories where you and your staff have worked together with county officials to handle an issue for your shared constituents? Fortunately, I have more success stories than I can think of off t he top of my head. We've collaborated with county commissioners, and state and federal agencies to complete some major projects in Georgia's Third District. Down in Troup County, we worked with county commissioners to fix the water 20 GEORGIA COUNTY GOVERNMENT levels at Lake West Point. We've also worked on various local dam projects with local officials and the Army Corps of Engineers to make sure these projects stay moving. In Henry County, we assisted the county in working with the Federal Aviation Administration to buy back the Atlanta South Area (or Tara Field) Airport and extend the runways. A lot of the work we've done has been facilitating meetings and acting as a liaison between county commissioners and local government, and the Georgia Department of Transportation and the U.S. Department of Transportation. For example in Coweta County, we worked really hard on getting the Poplar Road interchange added from I-85. Adding this interchange gave emergency access to the new Piedmont hospital. My staff also flew to D.C. with Carroll County commissioners to facilitate a meeting with the Census Bureau to discuss transportation and highway infrastructure in their county. In Fayette County, we worked with county commissioners on issues with railroad crossings in Peachtree City, and in Henry County, we worked with the Georgia Department of Transportation to get additional lanes added to I-75. Those are just a few examples that I can think of that are a direct result of federal and county government working together. These projects had a big impact on people's lives and our district's economy and commerce. I'm proud of the work we've done and what we've accomplished thus far. And I have to give credit to my staff who works alongside the county to see these projects through completion. It shows that working with each other gets a lot more done than trying to go at it alone. What do you see as an issue under discussion at the federal level that can impact local governments? One issue that comes to mind is the deteriorating infrastructure in Georgia and the resulting challenges for local government. The lengthy and ongoing debate in Congress over transportation funding is giving little stability to state and local
