Jobs, taxes, lifestyle and more are all at stake. Across Georgia, county leaders have succeeded at working with the military. Some maintain joint, ongoing projects requiring almost day-to-day coordination. Other counties rely on partnerships to support the continued existence of a base. While many counties' leaders welcome the military presence, a base's growth can leave them working to adjust policy and build infrastructure. Navigating it all often begins with a simple idea. Relationships matter most, says Houston County Commission Chairman Tommy Stalnaker. The county is home to Robins Air Force Base. "The process never ends, and the relationships never end," Stalnaker says. "We tell them all the time that they may be leaving the base or retiring from the Air Force, but the friendships continue for life."
