Georgia County Government - Fall 2016 - 11

DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE Professional Staffing By Ross King Executive Director >> One very important note regarding our professional staff - one for which I take a great deal of personal pride - is that every employee of ACCG is dedicated to providing our membership with top-shelf service. ACCG, GEORGIA'S COUNTY ASSOCIATION, has a very lengthy and prideful record of performance on behalf of our statewide membership! This record has been established due to one specific attribute that the association has enjoyed for many decades. The ACCG Board of Managers has consistently endorsed and supported the employment of highly qualified professional staff in each of the many disciplines that make up the ACCG staff roster. In any organization, if there is not a will and a heartfelt commitment from leadership to support their employees, it is guaranteed that the organization will never aspire and achieve its potential. I hesitate to use the term "full potential" because constant change is ever present in every organization due to both internal and external circumstances. As such, no one can predict the "full potential" of an organization. However, that fact does not limit an organization from consistently attempting to achieve lofty goals while aiding its respective membership. During a 1987 fall Board Retreat in Rabun County, the Board of Managers made a firm and foundational commitment to generate the necessary revenue to hire and maintain a professional staff for ACCG. I was fortunate to personally witness that event and knew immediately that I was part of an organization which set in motion the opportunity for purpose-driven growth and development. As an aside, the board also approved the establishment of our ACCG Training Program during that same retreat. It proved to be a very momentous event in the modern-day history of ACCG! As time passed, that commitment to excellence never wavered - another tremendous attribute of a strong and viable organization. Once a challenging but valued decision is made, it is imperative that leaders remain dedicated. The ACCG Board of Managers along with their successors have consistently supported annual budgets which have provided the revenue necessary to hire highly qualified professional staff members. In addition to generating and allocating revenue for staffing purposes, there are characteristics an organization must possess to attract the best and brightest talent available. We must have an organizational vision and purpose, foster a welcoming work environment, assume a team approach to achieving organizational goals, and constantly challenge each other to be the very best. ACCG has very fortunately been able to succeed in each of these critical areas so that we appeal to talented individuals. Once that occurs, it is incumbent upon leadership, management and membership to each play a critical series of roles independent of one another but dependent in the sense of creating a collaborative, fully-functioning team. Leadership must continue to provide the wisdom, vision and support that is ever changing and expanding. Management must take on the role of working diligently with a wide array of skilled professionals each with different skill sets to accommodate their respective program focuses - on a regular basis to ensure individual programs move forward. Leadership from my desk is but one aspect of the multi-pronged effort that must be consistently put forth. We consider ourselves to be very fortunate that we have attracted and maintained a highly skilled management team in the areas of policy development, legal services, leadership development, finance, among others. Our staff is very diverse in professional talent, years of service to ACCG, topical knowledge, networks and a multitude of other areas which result in a well-served membership. One very important note regarding our professional staff - one for which I take a great deal of personal pride - is that every employee of ACCG is dedicated to providing our membership with top-shelf service. We care deeply for those we serve and routinely provide our highest level, best talent and capacity to them! This is not an aspiration of the organization but a fact today and for all the tomorrows. I am proud that this current team of professionals is the one that serves our membership. I am so very thankful for our board's total and complete support of our team at ACCG. As a result, we are granted the opportunity to serve our membership with pride, dedication and total effort. The results are evident each day. Our committed staff members often recount the many ways in which they have assisted our county officials in making an overall difference in their local communities. Their committed service is indicative of the mission and purpose of ACCG, and I must say, what an exhilarating organization to work for indeed! ■ FALL 2016 www.accg.org 11 http://www.accg.org
