FEDERAL ISSUES Shaping the Future for GEORGIA'S AIRPORTS Impacts of the FAA Reauthorization Bill By Carol L. Comer, Director, Intermodal Division, Georgia Department of Transportation GEORGIA'S STATEWIDE SYSTEM of airports is an important transportation asset for the state's residents, businesses and visitors. Of the 104 publicly-owned public-use airports, 95 are General Aviation Airports, supporting the business, tourism, public safety, medical, government and recreational needs of the state. The remaining nine commercial service airports in the cities of Albany, Atlanta, Athens, Augusta, Brunswick, Columbus, Macon, Savannah and Valdosta provide scheduled airline service, connecting Georgia to the rest of the nation and to points around the globe. With Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport as the world's busiest, Georgia airports remain a significant driver of the state's economy - supporting more than 471,175 jobs, $17.8 billion in payroll and having 12 GEORGIA COUNTY GOVERNMENT a $62.6 billion economic impact - according to Georgia Department of Transportation's 2011 Statewide Aviation Economic Impact Study. To sustain aviation as a driving economic force in Georgia, a system of safe and efficient airports is vital. To identify Georgia's future aviation needs, it is important to understand the state's aviation history and how we got where we are today. During the 1940s, Georgia built approximately half of its public-use airports to support World War II. Then in the 1960s, Gov. Carl Sanders worked to build another 45 airports. As a pilot, he understood the importance of providing access to the state's rural communities and supporting opportunities for economic development. He worked with the Federal Aviation Administration, also known as the FAA, and secured $50,000 of federal funding. This was combined with $25,000 in state funding and $25,000 in local funding to build each airport. The partnership the state of Georgia forged with the FAA to expand the statewide system of airports in the '60s, is still vital today as the state works to safely maintain and expand its air transportation network for the future. To support planning and capital development projects, the FAA has historically provided nearly $70 million annually to Georgia airports, with the state funding about $12 million. Applications for airport funding received by Georgia DOT and FAA for fiscal year 2017 were in excess of $188 million. With roughly $82 million available annually in state and federal funding to support airports in Georgia,
