with Action Ministries, Inc. RELIEF hungry and serving local people in need. Its website illustrates its commitment to the community: "Our prayer is that the love of Christ be made known to all the world, starting right here in our neighborhood," the website says. Discussions with the executor of the estate uncovered what mattered most to Davenport. She wanted to make an impact in her community, especially on families and children. Both Alcovy UMC and Mt. Pleasant UMC already had the heart for missions. Now they had the means. What was next? They needed a partner, one which brought a depth of experience and connections in the area of mobilizing communities to lead people out of poverty. Such a partnership would allow the churches to multiply their efforts and touch lives in new ways. Action Ministries fit the bill. Leading People out of Poverty John Moeller, president & CEO of Action Ministries, considers what his organization does in local counties as a page-turner in the stories of people's lives. "Bringing hunger relief, housing and education to Georgia families who are hurting and struggling with poverty means that we're also bringing hope," Moeller said. "We are leading people out of poverty by giving them the tools and skills to become self-sufficient and to write a new chapter in the stories of generational poverty that we often see in our state. Sometimes that takes the form of a GED, a safe place to call home or a simple sandwich for a child who needs it." One of the first programs to touch families in Newton County was Smart Lunch, Smart Kid last summer. Approximately 1 million children in Georgia are eligible to receive free or reduced-price lunch, a crucial meal that disappears when school is out for the summer. In partnership with local congregations, corporations and volunteers, Smart Lunch, Smart Kid serves the children of Newton County lunch every day in the summer and provides enrichment opportunities. Because Action Ministries delivers lunches to the neighborhoods where food-insecure kids live, the barrier of lack of transportation is removed, allowing greater access to hunger relief. "We have a serious and heartbreaking need for childhood hunger relief in Newton County that not everyone is aware of," said Tamara Richardson, Action Ministries' regional director. "But when folks are made aware, they are so willing to help their neighbors in need. We served 16,938 lunches to kids in their neighborhoods last summer - our first summer with the program in Newton - which was absolutely made possible by our partners and volunteers." Next came SuperPacks. Newton County children at risk of hunger over the weekend receive a bag of food that can easily and discreetly fit into a backpack on a Thursday or Friday afternoon or before a long holiday. The food is child-friendly, nutritionally balanced, nonperishable and easy to prepare and eat. With the help of volunteers from Newton County churches, businesses, clubs and local neighborhoods, the food is picked up at Action Ministries Regional Hunger Relief Office in Atlanta and distributed to children in need at partnering schools in Covington. "SuperPacks have been a fantastic addition to our hunger-relief strategies in the community," Richardson said. "They allow us to fill in the gaps for food-insecure children during the school year, and even during the summer when we're not serving Smart Lunch, Smart Kid lunches on weekends." Super Packs help ensure Newton County children at risk of hunger receive balanced and nutritional meals over the weekend. Action Ministries has been able to fill in the gaps for children in need during the school year. Private-public Partnership Reaches More Families in Newton County In April 2016, Action Ministries entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Newton County Board of Commissioners to partner via a Community Service Block Grant (funding from the Georgia Department of Human Services) for the purpose of providing nutritional assistance. The funding was specifically for 5,000 Action Ministries Feed the Hungry food boxes and 3,900 SuperPacks for Newton County lowincome families and children. The 5,000 food boxes were divided evenly among the five Newton County Commission districts. Each commissioner determines how, when and where to distribute their designated 1,000 boxes within his or her district. SuperPacks are distributed along with the boxes to children participating in Action Ministries' Smart Lunch, Smart Kid summer feeding program or in conjunction with Newton County school system partners, once school resumes.
