Georgia County Government - Fall 2016 - 60

FEATURE SUMMER GEORGIA County Internship Program Highlights By Michele NeSmith ACCG Policy and Research Development Director THE ACCG CIVIC AFFAIRS FOUNDATION awarded 35 grants to 23 counties for the 2016 Summer Georgia County Internship Program. Counties interested in participating submit a grant application to the foundation each fall. Applicants are selected based on available funding, project quality and the benefit to the county and intern, among other factors. Since 2010, GCIP has provided more than 300 internship opportunities for college students and recent graduates in more than 60 counties across the state. The 2016 grant cycle provided students with a variety of projects to choose from in a number of disciplines. Technology at Work Exploring the World of GIS One of the most popular summer projects involved geographic information system (GIS) technology. Tyler Nuttall, a Kennesaw State University student majoring in information technology services, completed GIS projects for Bartow and Gwinnett counties. For Bartow, Nuttall updated sidewalk mapping information throughout the county. His work in Gwinnett included providing quality assurance for planimetric data created by a third party, which required him to gather samples of areas, analyze data, and note errors. Nuttall's efforts ensured that Gwinnett's planimetric data was correct for this year. Aislinn Wright, a public management major at the College of Coastal Georgia, interned with Glynn County's GIS Department. During her internship, Wright created a story map and tree canopy map of Jekyll Island. This project enabled her to develop a higher level of skills in map-making, story map applications, and various software. 60 GEORGIA COUNTY GOVERNMENT Sara Douglass, a master's candidate in city and regional planning at Georgia Tech, interned with the Cobb County Community Development Department. Douglass assisted with the updating the county's comprehensive plan and compared county and regional water standards to check for compliance. Aside from the new mapping skills she acquired, participating in public meetings on the comprehensive plan were her favorite parts of the internship. Website Development Two counties provided interns with the opportunity to learn about website development and design. Pamela Holton, a health informatics major at the College of Coastal Georgia, interned with the Glynn County IT Department. Holton created new and updated existing departmental webpages and trained staff on its content management. Holton noted that her most significant success was the work she performed on the new animal control system which required her to update and clean data from the old system for the conversion. Georgia College mass communications major Amanda Selby spent her summer interning with Wilkes County Government where she developed and created a county website. This project required layout planning, fact gathering from various departments and boards and inputting information into the appropriate web pages. Selby's favorite part Pamela Holton (right) is one GCIP intern that had the opportunity to work in web development and design. Holton created new and updated existing departmental webpages for Glynn County during the course of her internship. Photo courtesy Glynn County Government.
