Composite materials in various forms have been proven in the marine pile repair industry for decades. However the oldstyle tongue-and-groove jackets are typically held in place with numerous straps, screws and other fasteners that are laborintensive, difficult to install underwaterand are often not strong enough to withstand single-pump operations or long-term repair integrity. HDPE wraps and covers are considered effective corrosion control measures but are time-consuming to install correctly and can be susceptible to holes or tears caused by flotsam in the water and boat activity. Extensive consultation undertaken by the Joinlox engineering design team with a number of State and Federal GovernmentDOT’s, Port Authorities, Civil Construction and Dive Contractorsidentified a spectrum of pile repair industry requirements. Additionally, Joinlox engineers also researched dozens of studies undertaken by some of the world’s leading authorities, organizations and universities (including University of Maine, Virginia State University, North Carolina State University, University of Florida, University of Texasand others in USA) to understand the shortfalls of traditional protective coatings, gels, tapes, wraps and other conventional pile protection techniques including HDPE skins, FRP wraps and jackets. These findings were incorporated into the PileJax system development criteria consisting of a detailed 3 year process of engineering design, FEA studies, material selection, validation, physical proof testing and field trials to develop the most innovative, cost-effective pile repair jacketing system available. Prior to market launch, the PileJaxsystems had to pass rigorous field trials, weathering tests and independent analysis and materials testing by the renowned Structural Composites Centre of Excellence at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) and extensive physical and materials testing undertaken by independent NATA certified laboratories. “The rapid-fit PileJaxsolution requires no straps or fasteners by using unique and internationally patented Joinlox systems” Pettigrew said. “The lightweight PileJaxjackets are suitable for any pile size or configuration and can usually be fitted in minutes - greatly reducing labour, dive costs and lifting equipment requirements. The overall installation process of the PileJax™ has been proven to be at least three times faster than conventional composite jackets and at least five times faster than conventional wraps, skins and form-encasement systems, making it the most efficientand complete pile jacketing system on the market.” This makes the PileJaxsystem cost-effective for all types of protective repairs but can also provide additional strengthening that corrosion protection layers alone cannot. In most cases, this improved unitary strength also enables one continuous pump operation of the grout, epoxy or aggregate concrete medium, further reducing the total installed cost of repair per pile for the contractors and ultimately the asset owners.
