Timber Harvest Plan or, for owners of
smaller forests, a Nonindustrial Timber
Management Plan. These documents
provide a detailed plan of the logging
operation and an analysis of its potential
environmental effects.
Once the regulatory requirements
have been satisfied, the forester will
connect the landowner with a logging
company to perform the thinning project.
Any marketable timber harvested from
the site will be sent to a lumber mill, and
the rest will go through an industrial
wood chipper before heading off to a
Biofuel Renewable Auction Mechanism
facility. The BioRAM facilities burn the
woodchips to produce high-pressure
steam that drives a turbine generator and
produces electricity.
AFF's partners on this project include
the California Tree Farm System;
Jefferson Resource Company Inc., an
environmental and forestry consulting
firm; the Peterson Timber Services
harvesting company; Soper-Wheeler
Co., a family-owned timber company
managing 97,000 acres of forestland in
California; and Sierra Pacific Industries, a
family-owned, forest-products company
that owns and manages almost 1.9
million acres of timberland in California
and Washington.
The California Tree Farm System,
which maintains relationships with family
forest owners across the state, will play
a major role in the implementation of
the FBTI program. Through expanding
capacity, it will create a peer network
of landowners and be involved in the
coordination of all landowner outreach.
AFF is also working directly with several
forestry consulting companies to provide
landowner assistance.
California Conservation Manager for
AFF, Chantz Joyce, noted that "The My
Sierra Woods program is an opportunity
for family forest owners to reduce wildfire
risk for their own property as well as
their communities. This market-based
approach addresses the financial barrier
for private landowners, and creates a
path to improved management of family
forests, helping to create healthier, more
resilient forests that protect California's
forests and the critical water supplies
they support."a
