Bringing the Family Forest
Carbon Program to the
Central Appalachians and
Northern California
AFF, TNC, and their local
partners are launching the Family
Forest Carbon Program to select
regions in 2019, with an eye toward
expanding the program into other
areas of the country in the coming
years. In these regions, eligible
landowners who meet the program
criteria will work with professional
foresters to implement one or more
practices designed to improve
forest health while increasing the
carbon sequestration potential of
their individual property. These
practices are consistent with

forest management needs in each
region and also work to improve
wildlife habitat, reduce wildfire risk,
minimize soil erosion, and support
long-term sustainability of forest
product markets.
FFCP - California
In the Sierra Nevadas of northern
California, family owned forests
make up 51 percent of high fire
risk lands in the state. These
areas have been hit with drought,
disease, insects and overgrowth,
creating hazardous conditions and
threatening critical watersheds that
supply drinking water to millions.
Carbon-focused practices in this
region include:
Reforestation after Fire: Planting
trees on lands where regeneration
has been compromised following a
medium- to high-severity fire jumpstarts tree growth. This addresses

issues of lack of seed source and
competition with shrubs. These
reforested lands will be monitored
for seedling survival and tree growth
during a 20-year contract period.
Fire Risk Reduction/Resiliency
Thinning: Reducing the number
of trees per acre and creating a
more evenly spaced distribution of
trees will improve the overall forest
health condition on lands that
are designated high risk of being
destroyed by wildfire. This will help
trees resist insect and disease
attacks, as well as reduce the risk
