nnually, the Outstanding Tree Farmer of the Year (OTFY) award recognizes private landowners in the American
Tree Farm System (ATFS) that have done an exceptional job of forest management on their property and are
also actively promoting sustainable forestry. Through this award program, these individuals are honored as
leaders in good forestry while their land demonstrates the benefits of good forest management.

The Outstanding Tree Farmer of the Year award was created to:
Promote sustainable forest management,
Recognize outstanding Tree Farmers and the foresters who work with them,
Inspire other landowners to manage their land for good stewardship,
Engage candidates in efforts to influence legislation affecting private forest owners, where applicable, and
Cultivate champions for American Forest Foundation (AFF) initiatives.

SOUTHERN REGION
Southern Finalist: Stan and
Suzanne Wood of Alabama
Lying in the foothills of the
Appalachian Mountains, where
pine-laden bottomland meets the
flowing waters of the Mulberry
Fork, you'll find Stan and Suzanne
Wood's Riverwood Farms.
Traversing the expansive road
system and looking through
the stately pine stands it would
be hard to imagine that in
2006 when Stan and Suzanne
purchased Riverwood Farms the
property was an industrial fiber
plantation. These landowners have
accomplished an amazing amount
of work themselves, and proudly
practice sustainable forestry,
benefiting both wood and wildlife
habitat.
A significant amount of time and
effort has been devoted to wildlife
management for both game and
non-game species, from summer
and winter food plots, to identifying
native soft mast trees, to numerous
bluebird, yellowhammer, wood

duck and bat boxes. Streamside
management zones are evident
across Riverwood's acreage, with
proximity to Mulberry Fork which
has been identified as a habitat for

several endangered species. The
Woods are wonderful examples of
active stewards, and are always
willing to share their knowledge and
experience with other landowners.
