"I'VE ALWAYS BEEN SEEKING OUT WAYS
TO DO THINGS BETTER, AND I FOUND A
LOT OF HELP THROUGH THE AMERICAN
FOREST FOUNDATION..."
as a hardwood, so instead of being able to harvest your
wood in 30 years, it's more like 70 years," he says.
For the Woods, there's no need to rush. In 2010, they
completed construction of their dream house, modeled
after the classic Southern plantation-style homes. Stan
Wood may have made his money in the transportation
business, but these days, he plans on staying put.
"We are in the middle of nowhere, but we enjoy
sitting out on the porch in the evenings, listening to the
quail whistle and watching the deer," he says. "We enjoy
the tranquility of being out where it's quiet."
The Woods often invite children from local schools
and chapters of the 4-H Club and Future Farmers
of America to tour the land, learn proper forest
management practices and even see a prescribed burn,
and in September 2016, Riverwood hosted an event
called "ForestHer," a two-day workshop coordinated
with Auburn University to help women learn about forest
resource management.
"Suzanne is just as committed to it as I am and loves
the forestry operation," Wood says. "We have two grown
boys, and they both enjoy it too. It's a great way to
spend family time, especially in the fall and winter, when
the weather is pleasant here in Alabama. We consider
ourselves conservationists, and we want to leave the
land better off than we've found it. It's important to me
to leave some kind of legacy behind, and this is what I'm
going to leave to the kids and future generations."
