any white men would come in, the ginning supervisor
would take those people ahead of my father. And my
father would sit there and wait."
"My parents did not have an education, but they had
a good, strong work ethic. The one issue they drilled
hard into us was, 'Complete high school.' At the time at
least, that was a hallmark accomplishment." Hamilton
later enlisted in the United States Air Force and
following his enlistment, went to school for information
technology. After his father passed away, he returned
with his bride, Blanche Glenner, to live in a mobile home
on the family land to be near his mother.
"My mother gave us 1.7 acres for five dollars in
what's called a love-and-affection deed. Little did I
know at the time, it was worthless in the scheme of
land ownership." The land was heirs' property. He
could not sell that land and he could not use it to get
a loan to build a house. As he dealt with his landownership issues through the years, he heard about
an organization called the Center for Heirs' Property
Preservation, located in Charleston, SC, that was
committed to help landowners in his situation.
Heirs' property is land that has been passed down
between generations either without a written will, or
without the will being probated. South Carolina requires
a will to be probated within 10 years of death to be valid.
Without probate, the property is owned by all the heirs
in common, whether or not they live on the land or pay
the taxes. It's also known as "tenants in common." Any
