any family forest owners participating in the American Tree Farm
System® (ATFS) welcome the opportunities offered by their state
affiliates to get together, share experiences and learn from each
other. That's been more difficult in 2020, and landowners have missed these
interactions, but ATFS leaders have found ways to bring people together
virtually, providing them with essential connections to forest management
experts and to each other.
As part of its advocacy and promotion efforts this year, ATFS produced
and posted online a virtual tour of Director Angela Wells' Montana Tree
Farm. Wells used the video to establish and reinforce ATFS' relationships
with landowners and donors, encouraging them to connect with local
foresters to update their land management plans.
" We circulated that to donors and to a wider audience of landowners,
and it got really positive feedback, " said Wells.
But most of ATFS's community building
occurs at the state level, " The 42 state
affiliates really excel at face-to-face
landowner engagement. They're doing the
workshops, they're doing field days, they're
doing the activities to bring Tree Farmcertified inspectors or foresters together with
landowners, " said Wells. In 2020, because of
COVID-19 restrictions, forest fires in the West
and hurricanes in the Southeast, the state
programs haven't been able to interact with
landowners in the ways they usually do.
Some state affiliates, like Arkansas and
Washington, have used online technologies
to stay in touch with the family forest owners
in their areas.
Rethinking Programs for the Virtual World
The annual Arkansas Tree Farm Conference, usually held in May or June,
was initially rescheduled for October. Due to COVID-19 and the concerns
about in-person meetings, Arkansas's planning committee decided to
