on the surrounding eight acres,
and they rake a 150-foot perimeter
of fallen debris every spring and
fall. Dave does all the raking and
cutting, and then Lois burns the
piles in winter. " She gets the glory
part, " Dave says. They often recruit
their grandchildren to lend a hand
with cleanup and marking trees for
timber harvests.
The couple did some logging
a couple years ago and is now
working on cleanup. " Our main
focus is all the fire-protection
zones, the roads, and then the
perimeter to our neighbors, "
Kaufman said. " Get that done first
before we go into the interior. It's a
juggling act, because with the air
quality, there are only certain days
you can burn. " Future plans include
cleaning up existing skid trails to
create a series of walking trails.
Their primary focus beyond
fire mitigation is managing for the
healthiest trees possible, which
also helps with pest control. " We
have the bark beetle problem
here, " Lois said. " We want to give
the trees as much opportunity to
be healthy to fight off any kind of
insect infestations. "
Dave loves big trees, so you'll
find lots of sizable specimens on
their land, along with one of the
couple's favorite birds. " Because of
our large-diameter trees, we have
a lot of pileated woodpeckers, "
Dave said. " We see them in the
trees around the house all the time.
And if a tree does die, they'll nest
in it. "
Lois has a fondness for
trees that add what she calls
" architectural interest. " " I like the
narrow old nasty things that have
been around forever, " she said.
" When we were marking to do our
logging, Dave would stop at one
and I'd say, 'No, I want that one.' "
Planting a Legacy:
The Seedling Society
Lois and Dave are grateful for
what their forestry careers have
given them. They had done some

estate planning years ago, when
they were first married. Their Tree
Farm is in a family trust, and the
nonindustrial timber management
plan is part of that. Lois and Dave
also feel it's important to support
future generations of family forest
owners everywhere.
" We've been more successful
than we ever thought we would
be, " Lois said. " We started talking
about how we should spread this
around a little bit. That coincided
with the Seedling Society that AFF
has been putting together. AFF
has a great track record of learning
from history. They don't live in the
past - they learn from it, apply
those lessons, and look to the

future. We were thinking about how
many places we've enjoyed that
had been donated by a group or an
individual who paid it forward. We
don't have millions of dollars, but
we can combine what we have with
a group like AFF. It's a way to give
back to something that's given us
so much. "
" When you walk Lois and Dave's
property with them and hear them
talk about their family, their forestry
careers, how much they believe in
ATFS and AFF and the legacy they
want to leave, they epitomize what
the Seedling Society is about, " said
AFF Director of Philanthropy Beth
Riley. " The Seedling Society is meant
to be a group of people who have
