Woods, Wildlife and Warblers
program obtains funding for expansion

t's a question you hear often during political
campaigns, but this time, it's not for the voters to
answer; it's strictly for the birds: Are you better off now
than you were four years ago?
For the migratory bird species that call Vermont and
upstate New York home each spring and summer,
the answer is yes, and a lot of the credit goes to the
Woods, Wildlife and Warblers program. Launched in
2017, the program already has helped family forest
owners to improve more than 1,530 acres of forestland,
providing high-quality habitat for key species such as
the American woodcock, golden-winged warbler, blackthroated blue warbler and wood thrush.
Now, after receiving a second conservation grant
from the New England Forests and Rivers Fund last
August, the Woods, Wildlife and Warblers program is
gearing up for a second term of sorts. It's expanding
its outreach efforts to include all of Vermont, and over
the next two years, the goal is for family forest owners
to actively manage an additional 1,450 acres, giving
migratory bird species the elbow room they need to
thrive.

The New England Forests and Rivers Fund is a
partnership between the National Fish and Wildlife
Foundation, the American Forest Foundation,
Eversource, the Avangrid Foundation and the U.S.
Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources
Conservation Service (NRCS). Additional funding is
provided by the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service. Its goal is to restore and sustain
healthy forests and rivers that provide habitat for
diverse bird and fish populations.
The fund provided a $200,000 grant to Woods,
Wildlife and Warblers, a program that AFF helped to
launch in southern Vermont.
" The Woods, Wildlife and Warblers program began
in 2017 by providing landowners with information,
connections, and resources to care for and manage
their woods to enhance habitat for birds, " said
Madeline Jennison, Northern Conservation Manager
with the American Forest Foundation.
" The partnership sent out a survey to landowners
to learn more about the goals, interests and barriers
they face within this region. The partnership then used
