These connected devices are designed to easily communicate data with the consumer and are part of a greater network called the Internet of Things (IoT). From trash cans that can alert sanitation crews when they are full to cars that track driving for discounted auto insurance, the IoT is the network of physical objects that contain embedded technology to communicate and sense or interact with their internal states or external environment. As customers incorporate these products into their everyday lives, insurers are faced with opportunities and challenges to manage the data and exposures. Increased connectivity opens a number of doors to better predict and prevent losses. As the network expands, the threat of cyber risk does as well.
