MEMBER MOMENTS Biography Profiles the Life of ASID Fellow Ruth Lynford Ruth Lynford, an ASID Fellow, recently published a book titled Ruth Lynford: My Life in Design, written by Marlene Anne Birkman and designed by Kiku Obata & Company. The book tells the story of the incredible early life and career path of design pioneer Lynford, who graduated with a degree in architecture from Washington University in St. Louis and began her career in Manhattan with the architectural firm of York and Sawyer. Though she was hired to do drafting – “pushing a pencil” it was called – after three years she asked about her opportunities, and one of the principals told her “women are not allowed in the design studio or out in the field.” At that point, Lynford, one of the few women with a degree in architecture at that time, broke stride and stepped into interior design, which was then in its infancy. The story of this trailblazer is one of daring and design. The book invites its audience to experience Lynford’s lively coming of age as a person and professional. Her ongoing journey is one of grit and glamour. From her childhood in St. Louis to her adult life in New York, readers will see her imagination emerge. On March 28, 2013, she had a book signing event, hosted by Jim Druckman at the New York Design Center. Susan S. Szenasy, editor-in-chief of Metropolis Magazine, interviewed Lynford. This book is on sale and can be purchased through Amazon and Barnes & Noble online. Cover photo. MEMBER MOMENTS Susan Slotkis, Allied ASID, Publishes Foundations of Interior Design, 2nd Ed.
