Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) is a customer-oriented
design process that guides teams to create something
that is right the first time and accurately transfers the
voice of the customer into design solutions. To achieve
this goal, design teams must overcome many vulnerabilities that lead to problematic quality issues.
These design vulnerabilities can be organized into
two categories:
1. Conceptual vulnerabilities, which occur if a design lacks
conceptual robustness.
2. Operational vulnerabilities, which lead to low operational robustness when the designed products
are subjected to noise factors in the operational
environment.
Fortunately, two design tools-axiomatic design and
Taguchi robust parameter design-have been developed
to overcome these vulnerabilities.

DFSS domains

There are four domains in the DFSS process, as shown in
Figure 1 (p. 24):
1. Customer domain. The characteristics of the customer
domain are customer attributes (CA), which are customers' expressions about their needs.
2. Functional domain. The key contents of this domain
are functional requirements (FR), which are the functional needs of the design solutions that satisfy the CAs.
3. Physical domain. Design parameters (DP) are the
central components of the physical domain. They are
product design solutions that satisfy the FRs.
4. Process domain. This domain is represented by process
variables (PV)-the process elements that satisfy the
specified DPs.
