What happens when the path from idea to delivery is not clear
and direct? What does a team do when the bridge from present
to future has a turn in it?
If the person or team that generated the idea passes the concept to a separate team for delivery, a problem can arise when
the plan needs to be changed. Executives at major U.S. airlines
in the early 2000s sketched out plans for low-cost subsidiary
airlines staffed with humorous crew members wearing appealing
uniforms. The execution of these plans, however, was not innovative in areas of cost modeling or corporate culture, and prevented
these plans from ever taking off.
To ensure a consistent and thorough approach during bridge
construction, engineers will use temporary supports called
"falseworks" to set up landing points that provide a sturdy base.
The falseworks will not be a part of the end result-they are used
only to keep the construction steady.
When managing a project that is crossing a chasm from
today's reality to the vision for tomorrow, it is important to keep
a consistent and thorough approach to execution to prevent the
loss of the original vision and to keep all stakeholders informed.
Think about knots in a strand of pearls. If the necklace breaks,
the tiny knots in the spaces between the pearls prevent the loss
of multiple pearls. Similarly, structured reviews of key actions and
variables throughout the project implementation help to keep all
parties informed and advised of needed changes.
The review doesn't have to be complicated-it can be similar
to a tollgate review in an improvement project (see Table 1). The
key in this case, referring to the bridge engineering principle
of falseworks, is that the necessary support for the project's
execution is reinforced throughout the project. Pearl knots help

to preserve the original plan while executing it, even if the bridge
has a turn in it.

Tension and compression

Tension and compression is another engineering principle we can
apply during innovation management: The individual steel members on a steel truss bridge will have different responses to heavy
vehicles crossing the span. Some will be extended, and others will
be squeezed. This is similar to holding a pencil in both hands and
pushing with your thumbs as if to break it into two pieces.
As you push outward before the pencil breaks, the edge of the
pencil that is away from you and your thumbs is being stretched,
and the edge of the pencil that is against your thumbs is being
squeezed. As described in the automotive axle example, these
conditions are tension and compression. Tension is stretching the
