The quality inside Quality Progress

Cultural Integrity
How to know when transformation is working
Even though you can't see it, culture has the strength to
define whether your organization flourishes-or fails. And
leaders have the duty and responsibility to intimately understand the dynamics at play that are influencing shifts in quality
culture, so that they can pinpoint exactly when culture moves in
a positive direction, or when there is evidence it's taken a turn for
the worse.
Inflection points mark the shift in a trend, and leaders must
be able to recognize when their efforts are having the desired
effects. In "In the Right Direction," p. 18, author Stephen Hacker
describes the delicate process of changing a quality culture for
the better by providing examples of times there were clear tipping points and, retrospectively, identifying when the inflection
points occurred.
Culture is always changing, but if leaders are cognizant of
the signs of a shift, they have the power to fuel the positive
changes-or defuse the negative.
"A Different Kind of BBQ," p. 24, explains how organizations
can benefit from behavior-based quality. Starting with leaders
at the top and cascading down throughout, the concept of
BBQ means that quality is embedded in every aspect of an

organization. It's much easier said than done, but sustainability is only possible when quality behaviors are practiced
everywhere, from HR, finance, sales and marketing to the
shop floor.
Everyone has a story or three about a process improvement
project that didn't go off as planned. "Impeding Progress," p.
38, is a great recap of the key reasons process improvement
projects bomb. And if you've been working on projects for any
length of time, you'll likely have a few, "Been there, done that,"
moments as you read. Help your newer colleagues who are
leading teams avoid these mistakes by sending them a copy of
this article. They'll thank you.
