IT is changing the way we live, love, earn and learn. The
world seems more interconnected today than ever before.
The amount of information available on the internet, including
social media, sensors and connected devices, is exploding rapidly, and this trend is expected to continue at a faster rate.1, 2
More and more organizations are realizing that excellent
customer experience is not enough, and organizations are
using multiple communication channels to educate, engage
and empower customers.
Organizations use social media to publicize and sell their
products in the global marketplace. Customers, employees and
community members also use social media to express opinions,
preferences, priorities, attitudes, behaviors, knowledge and
feelings. Customers take feedback from friends, colleagues,

neighbors and family members to make purchasing decisions
and recommend products and services to them.
Organizations that are continuously looking for ways to
improve products and services can exploit critical internal and
external information and combine it to deliver the right data
to the right people at the right time. Getting the right information to the right people at all levels at the right time helps
organizations remain competitive and succeed in the global
marketplace.

Mechanics of advanced analytics

Traditional quality management tools focus on analyzing
historical, structured information by using advanced lean Six
Sigma tools, such as statistical modeling, advanced design of
experiments and fishbone diagrams, to find out what happened and why it happened.
According to IBM, structured information constitutes just
20% of the overall information produced.3 The remaining 80%
of the information is unstructured or semi-structured. Unstructured data can be created anywhere by anyone at any time in
any form. The latest IT innovations have led to advanced analytics tools to make meaningful use of structured, unstructured
and semi-structured information in a timely manner.
