QMSs to their specific processes and products. However, doing so requires new auditing
approaches and competencies to assess an
organization's conformance with the new
requirements.⁴ While some organizations may
take a different approach, such as Six Sigma,
lean, sector-specific standards, business excellence models and quality guru approaches,
ISO 9001:2015's flexibility allows the integration of its requirements with these other
approaches, laying the foundation for their
efficient use.
In the search for quick success, some
organizations might prefer using isolated,
case-by-case improvement activities supported by intuitive or simple approaches
instead of a QMS. However, the lack of holistic,
integrated and theory-based methods, such
as the one provided by an ISO 9001:2015 QMS,
also means that, in many cases, improvement
results are short term, limited in scope and
unsustainable.

Survey structure

Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto
(ISEP), a research institute in Portugal,
surveyed auditors certified by the International Register of Certificated Auditors
(IRCA) to determine their perceptions of and
experiences with ISO 9001:2015. The survey
results were analyzed to show the differences
between auditors from North America and
those from the rest of the world.
The total survey population encompassed
5,459 auditors from 118 countries who were
contacted via email in the second quarter of
2016.
The survey included three groups of questions, and each question assessed a research
parameter (P) (see Online Table 1, which can
be found on this article's webpage at qualityprogress.com, to read the survey):
1. Group one (G1) questions established the
auditor's background.
2. Group two (G2) questions focused on the
auditor's perceptions of the ISO 9001:2015
revisions.
3. Group three (G3) questions assessed the
auditor's experiences with the organizations
