in the same position and how that
affects individual salary. We've dropped that
section because we consistently saw that the correlation between time in any job and the salary of
the person in that job was minimal. What counts,
we've seen, is experience in quality.

Likewise, when we polled hiring managers in
2013 and asked them what attributes they sought
in candidates for hire or promotion, experience
came out on top. They cited different forms of
experience, including domain or industry experience, and experience with a particular regulatory
regime. Above all, however, they said they
wanted to see a track record of results in quality.
Figure 1 shows the scant effect that time in
one's same job has on earnings. Similar data are
shown in Table 1, in which we use color-coding to
highlight that, sometimes, staying in the same job
actually seems to lower one's salary.
The more robust effect of the time one has
worked in the quality profession is shown in
Figure 2. There, you see that in the United States,
31.4% of full-time respondents have been in the
quality profession for more than 20 years and
earn an average of $109,264. Figure 3 shows
similar data for Canada.
