CHAIR'S MESSAGE 2016 Is Flying By... Summer Is Here! C ongratulations to everyone for making it through Atlanta pollen season once again! It is a necessary rite of passage from spring into summer for all of us. And as we head into summer, your Atlanta Apartment Association will be as busy as ever. We have just wrapped up our annual Membership Campaign with very successful results. I want to send out a huge thank you to our staff and committee for all of their hard work and dedication. We would not be a successful association without our members and volunteers! Your Government Affairs team and several board members participated in the NAA Capital Conference in Washington, D.C. We were able to meet with many congressional delegations to discuss items important to us in the multifamily housing industry. The highlight of the trip was meeting with Senator Johnny Isakson who has been a friend to the industry for many years. Issues discussed this year included future funding of workforce housing programs, pending expiration of federal flood insurance programs and litigation associated with Fair Housing/ADA concerns. It was a packed day on the hill but we were lucky enough to have a spectacular sunny 70-degree day in D.C. Thanks to all who participated, and we hope to see many more of you participate in the coming year. Make sure you have your calendars updated as we have many upcoming events you won't want to miss. The Trade Show is fast approaching on May 18 from 1 to 6:30 p.m. Free pre-registration is open on the AAA website for owner/manager members. We are looking forward to another sold-out show this year. You won't want to miss it. This year's NAA Education Conference is in San Francisco on June 15-18. This conference is the largest annual meeting of multifamily professionals and offers some of the very best industry education available. We hope to see many of you there taking advantage of opportunities to improve your knowledge about apartment leasing and management and to strengthen relationships, make new friends and have a great time. Following behind the trade show, is the Food-a-Thon Kickoff Event on June 22 at the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Every year we push to break our previous year's total as we strive to help those less fortunate in our communities. For 2015, we were able to provide over 7.3 million meals. We are thrilled to have Chris Burns and Virginia Love chairing our committee this year. If you are interested in being a sponsor, please reach out to them or our AAA staff. The Peggy Waskom Super Bowl will take place on July 14 this year. In Peggy's honor, this event benefits the Georgia Apartment Industry Education Foundation, an organization that promotes, educates and trains individuals to enter our industry. This organization is now operating out of our AAA offices and we couldn't be happier. You won't want to miss this worthy and fun event. And last but certainly not least, is our next Dinner Meeting on July 28 with hypnotist Rodney Rash. Take advantage of our Reverse Trade Show ahead of the dinner meeting where our associate members have an opportunity to get in front of our owner/managers. Always a fun time. It is going to be a busy summer, and I hope to see all of you at our upcoming events. Thanks for all that you do for our association.
