Turning on the Faucet:
Making National Water
Model Data Flow

T

he National Water Model (NWM) produces hundreds
of gigabytes of output each day. From analytical
soil moisture estimates on a continuous 2-D grid to
forecasted streamflow predictions along discrete
river segments, this translates to trillions of data values.
NOAA, in collaboration with academia and industry, has been
developing ways to share this information to a wide variety of
users, from fellow modelers to first responders to interested
citizens. Diverse users require different approaches to make
the data available in requisite and user-friendly formats.

NOAA is working with, and across, the water
enterprise to build a services infrastructure on top
of the NWM output to facilitate targeted service
delivery and rapid synthesis for a wide spectrum
of users and stakeholders. Approaches from three
entities will be presented here: NOAA, ESRI and the
Brigham Young University.

Today, NOAA disseminates NWM data through
two distinct avenues depending on user preference
for model forecast values, or a visualization of
the forecast.
Forecast values are available through the NOAA
Operational Model Archive and Distribution
System (NOMADS) which provides access to raw
model output for further analysis and processing.
One can download netCDF files (network Common
Data Form, a data format supporting array-oriented
scientific data) generated by the model over a
two-day moving window (i.e. data for the current
calendar day and previous day). This data is most
useful for the modeling and science community.

In contrast, the NOAA Office of Water
Prediction (OWP) website provides access to
NWM output through an interactive map interface
which allows a user to zoom in and out of regions
of interest and visualize streamflow on the 2.7
million river segments of the 1:100K scale National
Hydrography Dataset (NHD). Once zoomed in, a
user can click on a point of interest and see the latest
streamflow prediction (18 hours ahead, 10 days
ahead and 30 days ahead). In addition to visualizing
NWM streamflow, users can also visualize the
latest soil moisture analysis produced by the model.

or dry the soil is over a specific area of interest at
