aBa chairman’s view BY MATT WILLIAMS Banking: It’s more than just a job T “Regardless of bank size or the initials of your association, we have more in common Than dIffeRences” Matt williaMs Chairman and President, Gothenburg State Bank, Gothenburg, Neb. 4| ABA BANKING JOURNAL | March 2013 he United States has the most diverse and resilient economy in the world. This economy requires the most diverse and resilient banking system in the world. Banks of all sizes, charters, business models, and geographies are needed to ensure that we not only survive, but thrive in an ever-shrinking world. I’m very capable of loaning money to the pharmacy across the street or the car dealership down the road, but it takes a larger, more complex bank to handle the financial needs of the pharmaceutical or automobile industries. We need to recognize the importance of a united industry and work toward that goal. Strength comes with unity. Does anyone believe that our industry’s lack of unity was not a problem in the passage of the Dodd-Frank Act? All too often, we use labels to describe people and things: Republicans and Democrats, men and women, Huskers and Sooners, large banks and community banks. Labels have a way of putting things into categories and emphasizing our differences, rather than embracing our areas of commonality. I’m convinced that as bankers, regardless of bank size or the initials of your association, we have a great deal more in common than we have as differences. But, if we continue to emphasize our differences, we will continue to have difficulty influencing policy makers in Washington. Banking is not a one-dimensional or even two-dimensional industry. We need a flexible, graduated regulatory system that takes into account the range of size, charters, and business models. I applaud the current heads of our regulatory agencies, who understand that regulation simply can’t be one size fits all. All bankers need to be part of the solution. Bashing the large banks hurts the entire industry. It reinforces the negative stereotype among a public that does not distinguish between large and small banks, and it fuels anti-bank policies. As ABA chairman, I won’t defend the poor actions of large banks or community banks. As an industry, we are about helping people and growing communities. Unity enhances our industry’s influence and strengthens our voice in Washington. As industry leaders, it is our responsibility to stand up and accept responsibility and work together for positive change. Last year’s ABA Government Relations Summit was one of the most energetic events I’ve ever attended. When bankers were asked to contact members of Congress with letters, phone calls, and visits at home and in Washington, one banker said, “Banking is a career. It’s a calling. It’s not just a job. Contacting your members of Congress is something you should do because you believe in what you do. You can make a difference.” If you have not made your reservation for the 2013 Summit on April 15-17, do it now at ABA.com/summit. Show Washington that we are part of the solution. United, we will make a difference! n http://www.ABA.com/summit
