ABA chairman's view BY Jeff Plagge tools to help focus your message A "Bankers are the most effective spokespeople for the industry" Jeff PlAgge President and CeO, Northwest financial Corp., arnolds Park, Iowa 4| ABA BANKING JOURNAL | March 2014 BA is working to make our bankers more effective communicators, because we have a vitally important story to tell about our industry and what it is doing for our communities as well as our country. We need to persuade policymakers to embrace changes that will help banks create jobs in our communities and grow the nation's economy. If banks are held back, a sustainable economic recovery is held back. Bankers have strong convictions about what is happening to our industry. We know when government regulations are tying our hands. And we're eager to speak out. Sometimes, though, we need an assist. That's where your state association and ABA come in. ABA is dedicated to providing bankers with the resources they need to make an effective case for banking. Whether the audience is a member of Congress, a community group, or a reporter, ABA offers materials to help bankers illustrate the consequences of ill-advised legislation, excessive regulation, and unfair competition. Some recent examples include: * 2014 Key Banking Issues for Congress-Why They Matter to You and Your Constituents * Data Breach Communications Kit * 2014 Communications Guide to the Nation's Banking Issues * Our Credit Unions Have Outgrown Their Mission and Tax Exemption brochure (explains how credit unions have changed) * The Farm Credit System: America's Least Known Government-Sponsored Enterprise brochure (makes a case for FCS reform) The Farm Credit System publication was sponsored by FEAI, ABA's Financial Education and Advocacy Initiative, which is a 501(c)(4) organization that is strengthening our ability to advocate on behalf of the banking community. Find out how your bank can get involved in FEAI at ABA.com. In addition to these publications, ABA has created a grassroots program called Amplify to make it easier for bankers to spread the word about the vital role that banks play in our communities. Amplify is a website-amplifybankers. com-that offers resources to help you tell your bank's story. It's designed to help you redirect the conversation about the banking industry to the good that banks do. Resources available on the website include key messages; sample speeches and letters; media interview tips; a how-to for planning a groundbreaking or a ribbon-cutting ceremony to promote a bank-financed project; and even stepby-step instructions for hosting a visit by a member of the House or Senate at your bank. Amplify is accessible and free to all bankers-not just ABA members-because it's that important. ABA has developed all these resources with the understanding that bankers-as constituents, as community leaders, as financial experts-are the most effective spokespeople for the industry. We have the knowledge and conviction to make impassioned arguments. We are, in other words, already halfway there. The lobbying and communications resources are meant to help us the rest of the way to our goals. It is all about getting back to the business of banking.
