RAIC'S 2019 FESTIVAL OF ARCHITECTURE:

DESIGNING THE FUTURE
The RAIC's 2019 Festival of Architecture, with the theme of the Future of Architecture, will be held from October
26 to 30 in Toronto at the Westin Harbour Castle. The Festival will offer five days of learning and networking and
a chance to see Canada's most diverse city through the eyes of architects and architectural historians.

Delegates will
hear from one
of the icons of
20th-century
architecture, Italian
architect Renzo
Piano, who will be
inducted as a new Honorary Fellow of
the RAIC. They will also hear thoughtprovoking ideas about designing
urban life for the 21st century from
Manhattan-based Vishaan Chakrabarti,
FAIA, whose book A Country of
Cities was named one of the top
ten books of 2013 in the
Huffington Post.
Other special guests and plenary
speakers include Royal Institute
of British Architects President
Alan Jones, American Institute of
Architects President, William J.
Bates, FAIA, and FCARM (Federación
de Colegios de Arquitectos de la
República Mexicana) Past President,
José Luis Cortés.
Festival is also where the RAIC
presents Canada's top architectural
awards, from the Prix du XXe Siècle
to the Awards of Excellence. The
buzz will begin on the eve of Festival,
October 25, when the winner of the
$100,000 RAIC International Prize is
unveiled at a gala dinner. For the first
time, the RAIC International Prize
Gala will be held in conjunction with
the Festival. The award celebrates
architecture's social relevance and
transformative value.

Another draw this year is POP // CAN
// CRIT 2019, also held for the first
time at Festival. This annual national
symposium will look at the Education
and Emergence of Architects in Canada.
What role will tomorrow's architects
play in Canada, and what resources will
they need to succeed?
The Festival continuing education
program this year includes 19
sessions, 16 expert-led tours, and six
plenaries. Delegates should register
by September 30 to take advantage of
discounts on registration fees.

Continuing Education Sessions
The Festival's continuing education
sessions are chosen to help design
professionals keep up to date and to
grow their businesses. Green is a strong
theme of this Festival, with over a third
of sessions related to sustainability.
Also for the first time, all Festival
plenary sessions, tours, and workshops
will be included in RAIC continuing
education certificates. A few of this
year's 19 sessions* look at:




how low energy building design
was used in a new research centre
at York University;
how to build for a Net Zero Carbon
future, using the case study of
Mount Dennis Childcare;

how building design will be
increasingly reliant on energy
modeling results;
 how a new futuristic central library
is shaping Calgary;
 how Inuit knowledge was applied
to the design of the Canadian High
Arctic Research Station; and
 how a national historic site Toronto's Union Station - was
expanded while respecting its
heritage value.
There will also be sessions on equity
and inclusion, comprehensive density,
implementing a digital practice,
and how people with vision loss
experience buildings and landscapes,
among others.


You can explore and register for all
