RAIC International
Prize Scholarships
By TANNER MORTON

T

hree architecture students from the
University of Manitoba, Dalhousie
University, and the University of
Montreal will each receive a $5,000
RAIC International Prize Scholarship at the
upcoming RAIC International Prize Gala on
Friday, October 25, in Toronto.
A six-member jury selected the winners
from among 93 entrants to an essay
competition asking: Please describe the
moment-the circumstances, the nature of
the event-when you decided to become an
architect, or when you knew that your decision
to become an architect was the right one.
Read excerpts from the essays below and
in full at internationalprize.raic.org.
The scholarships are presented in
conjunction with the $100,000 RAIC
International Prize, and the students will
share the stage with representatives of the
three shortlisted projects from Senegal, Peru,
and Chile. It promises to be an exciting and
moving moment when the recipient of the
prize is announced at the gala.
The RAIC International Prize, now in its
third edition, goes to a single architecture
project that is judged to be transformative

within its society and expresses the values
of social justice, respect, equality, and
inclusiveness.
One of the most generous architecture
prizes in the world, the RAIC International
Prize is also distinguished by the selection
process. Instead of relying on images, jury
members visit the shortlisted sites, talk to
the users, and experience the architecture in
person, as it was meant to be.
The shortlisted projects are:
* Edificio E, University of Piura, Piura,
Peru (Barclay & Crousse);
*	 Thread: Artists' Residence and
Cultural Centre, Sinthian, Senegal,
(Toshiko Mori Architect);
* Baha'i Temple of South America,
Santiago, Chile, (Hariri Pontarini
Architects).
The gala kicks off the 2019 RAIC Festival of
Architecture to be held in Toronto on October
25 to 30. Register before September 30 for the
best price at festival2019.raic.org.Tickets for
the gala are available, including at the special
price of $1,600 for a table of eight.
"These essays describe moments when
their authors understood the world through

architecture and formed their own wish
to be an architect," says RAIC President
Michael Cox, FRAIC. "Gathering with
people, travelling, reading - all are enriched
by the places where they occur. In very
different ways, the essays evoke the value
given by the built world to our lives, and
the wish of architects to contribute."
In addition to the three scholarship
recipients, the jury awarded a Certificate
of High Merit to a fourth student at the
University of Waterloo.
The scholarship jury members are Elsa
Lam, FRAIC, Anne Bordeleau, MRAIC,
Douglas Macleod, FRAIC, André Perrotte,
FIRAC, Barry Sampson, FRAIC, and David
Covo, FRAIC.

ESSAY EXCERPTS

T
ODUDU UMOESSIEN
22, Master of Architecture, first year,
University of Manitoba

here are moments in life that
reveal the roots of your deepest
curiosities. For me, it started
in the inner communities of Abuja in
central Nigeria. When I was a child, I
would sit in a circle with friends by a
fire at night in the central courtyard
of my neighbourhood. I had an aunt
who would tell us stories at night.
In that moment of sitting together
closely, we had a space, a common
space which was guided by the voice
of the storyteller. I, and the other kids,

enjoyed being in that space. Even
when the stories were over, the love
for that space remained: we took care
of it and made it our own. My aunt
became aware of this and made it my
responsibility to prepare the space
for the other children when the time
for stories came. Due to that intimate
relationship I enjoyed with the space, I
observed closely how it was being used
by people. It was then that I became
consumed by the relationship between
people and space.
